2026 Newsletter

Lana and I welcome you to Broadwater.  This year we celebrate our Fifth Annual Bull and Female on Property Sale.  Over the past year like all others running beef and farming operations we have had some tough economic conditions with input costs significantly increasing.  It’s great to see some normality returning to fuel and fertliser prices over the past few weeks and a real kick in the live cattle market, especially strong for Angus feeders.

We scrambled in early June to plant Winter forage following a couple of favourable rain events.  Prior to that it had been a dry run and we were all expecting a tough Winter.  As part of our planning, we decided to wean earlier than we had previously so that our Breeder herd would not be lactating as conditions toughened.  This has proven to be a great strategy. The cows are powering ahead over at Wylie Springs as they were moved into fresh forest country and supported by liquid supplement.  The Weaners are also moving forward.  After 2 weeks yard weaning, they are gaining weight in the holding paddocks at Broadwater.  Daily silage feeds and ad lib high protein pellets (fortified with Bovacillus) form the daily ration.  The weaners will move onto our riverside paddocks as soon as our Oats are considered ready for grazing, expected second half of July.  Conserving fodder over recent years has been invaluable and replenishing the Silage pits will be first priority again this Summer.

Our 2026 Sale listing represents the second and third cow generations of our own breeding selection strategies made over the past decade. Tailored joining’s through ET, AI and Natural Matings have been designed to enhance the production traits of our foundation cow herd running under commercial conditions. We have retained the best of our female progeny which have earnt their place within our growing cow herd.

The genetic progress we have made over the last 10 calf drops is evident in our Breed Plan analysis. Our cattle demonstrate moderate Birth Weights coupled with Strong Growth and Carcass Value gains. On offer this year will be 35 rising two-year old bulls and 10 PTIC heifers.  The heifers are from the heart of our herd and will be listed in pairs with the successful buyer having the opportunity to take their pick of the pen.

Whether it be a Bull or Heifer, soft cattle with natural muscling and moderate frames carrying the most Progressive Genetics will be made available to astute cattle producers. Suitable for finishing on grass or grain we aim to breed Angus that add real value to beef breeding operations.  Amongst others this year we offer Sons of GB FIREBALL, MYERS FAIR-N-SQUARE, BALDRIDGE SR GOALKEEPER, HOFFMAN THEDFORD and our own outlier BROADWATER TAMBO T25.

Reviewing the 2026 Catalogue; 32 animals with favourable birthweights are considered “Heifer Safe”.  A total of 20 Lots of the listing also earning our mark for “Exceptional Growth”.  A further 15 are considered “Carcass Value Improvers”.  Trifecta bulls and heifers featuring throughout the catalogue have earnt all 3 marks, validated by Genomic testing.
