A Brief History

Seventeen years ago, we purchased Broadwater on the banks of the Condamine River, 22Klm NNW of Warwick.  At that time the property was pretty much a block bare of infrastructure.  After completing the first job of building a new home for our young family, we set about improving the property through fencing, yard building, irrigation development and just three months ago the completion of our bull selling and covered yards facility.  Over these years we have also added to our farm machinery list and today after considerable investment we are less reliant on contractors for cultivation and crop/pasture sowing.

Whilst relative new comers to the stud stock scene we have been breeding and feeding cattle for the past 20 years.  Our business model has evolved from growing out bought in steers on grain bins for the local butcher trade, through the breeding of crossbred beef cattle (terminal sire) all the way through to the stud Angus breeding operation in place today.  Through further property development we aim to continue to increase our breeder numbers and also our annual offering of Angus bulls carrying what we consider Progressive Genetics.  It is our goal that the bulls we produce and sell will add value to all of those breeding, feeding and processing in the Australian Beef Industry.  Our first registered Angus calves were born in 2016 and just 6 drops later, as bull numbers have grown, we have decided to commit to our inaugural on property sale.  The sale will be held on Broadwater on the 2nd of September 2022.  On offer sale day will be 13 x 2-year-old R bulls and 30 x 16–18-month-old yearlings sired by leading US and Australian Sires.

Broadwater Angus genetic base

Our first registered Angus bulls were purchased from Wattletop, Guyra in Spring 2015.  These Regent bulls were joined to our Santa Gertrudis cows and produced great first cross progeny.  Meat quality was evident as we processed all carcasses through our own local retail outlet that we owned and operated for 6 years.

Our first purebred Angus females were purchased PTIC from Farrer and resultant progeny were born on Broadwater.  Through these calves we were introduced to AI sires from the USA such as GAR Surefire, VAR Discovery and PA Full Power and it is fair to say our passion for genetic progress was ignited.

When we were advised of the upcoming Wattletop dispersal (May 2017) the opportunity to purchase additional PTIC females could not be missed.  Buying into the genetics that Lock Rodgers had built up over his 35 hugely successful years in the stud business fast-tracked our progress down the path.  It was not long and we had calves on the ground registered to the Broadwater prefix (LJS) featuring sires such as Ayrvale General and Wattletop Franklin G188.  G188, a bull that Lock once described as one of the best bulls he had ever bred.

Next, we purchased additional females from other well-regarded studs such as Dulverton, Ascot and Lawsons, and more recently we took part in the Ayrvale dispersal.  All of these bought in females have been selected on a balance between phenotype, desirable ebv’s for certain traits and of course budget.  In September 2017 we purchased additional country in the Wylie Creek district of Northern NSW to assist in carrying our growing female numbers.  Wylie Springs was another bare block with great potential and will be further developed in coming years with an ongoing fencing and improved pasture program
